Hmmmm, Maybe Harald Fuhrmann Is RIGHT!!! |

The author of this piece from The Tribune may
naively think the reputation of the Bahamas has not already been
affected, when indeed, it has!

Dodgy Land
Deals 'Could Wreck The Bahamas Reputation'
''It makes us look like a bunch of pirates, with local lawyers
giving the okay to bad deals.''
Realtors are concerned that dubious land deals in which
foreigners are being sold acreage with bad title could wreck the
Bahamas' international reputation.
Buyers are paying large sums for property with "worthless
documentation" sources told The Tribune last night.
It is claimed that some Nassau law firms, either through
dishonesty or incompetence, are assuring victims that they have
good title to the land when they haven't.
Many of the dodgy deals are taking place in the Family islands.
Buyers who think they are buying their own piece of paradise
find their is no proper title chain, and that their deeds are
useless.
One realtor said, "No one is going to want to buy land in the
Bahamas if they hear others have been duped. Some lawyers are
telling people their title is good when it's clear it isn't."
"This is something the government needs to look into now before
our international reputation is in ruins."
Real estate agent Mike Lightbourn was actually approached by a
foreigner who said he was chaining off part of the parking lot
next to his office.
The man said he had acquired the land, but Mr. Lightbourn told
him he had no right to it.
There is also concern that foreign agents are operating in the
Bahamas without proper licence, selling the land without
approvals and permits.
"A deed without a registration certificate is a worthless piece
of paper," said one realtor.
It is alleged that some lawyers are advising buyers that titles
are good when they aren't.
"Some of it is deliberate deception and some is the result of
sheer incompetence," said the source.
"All this is going to give the Bahamas a bad name," he said, "It
makes us look like a bunch of pirates, with local lawyers giving
the okay to bad deals." |
Is it not ironic, that the
whiners
like kimberly and beachbum do not attack Mike Lightbourn, or the
un-named source mentioned above, for saying the things they did.
Nor, do they attack Mr. Julian Francis, whose criticism of the legal
profession in the Bahamas has been quite pronounced lately.
Nor, do they attack Wayne Munroe, the head of the incompetent and
corrupt Bahamas Bar Association, when he admits, as he did recently,
that "bad" lawyers are to blame for most court delays.
Nor, do they attack the Chief Justice of The Bahamas, whose public
criticism of the delays and incompetence in our courts highlight the
destruction of our legal system, and in fact, our entire society.
Then why do they (and so many other foolish Bahamians) attack Harald
Fuhrmann for saying the exact same things in his almost cute broken
English. He is saying nothing that the others, mentioned above,
haven't already said.
Maybe it is that stubborn "Bahamian pride" that is the root of this
evil.
Whatever the reason, it is time for Bahamians to start listening to
Harald, because he has been pointing out the single biggest
impediment to the continued and proper social and economic
development of our nation... corruption in the political/legal
system and the blatant mockery of the Rule of Law.
While Bahamians are ignoring Harald Fuhrmann, scoundrels in Rum Cay
are burning another foreigner's aircraft. Crooks in another Family
Island have illegally taken over a foreigner's property. Foreign
investors are being threatened in two other family islands as well,
according to the local papers.
And don't forget, the founder of BahamasB2B, who has been exposing
these problems for years, still has a tenant (who was LEGALLY
evicted) in her building on Mackey Street. A tenant who hasn't paid
rent in three years because of a highly suspect, quasi-legal
injunction issued by a biased and incompetent retired Supreme Court
Judge. The rogue tenant is only in the building because the court
system, has for years and in violation of the Bahamas constitution,
denied the property owner the rights to her property. This is
entirely due to the underhanded manipulation of the system, by
crooked lawyers and corrupt judges, who are on the payroll of one of
the top "capos" in the Bahamian mafia.
AND... Harald Fuhrmann is still complaining about something that
would have been properly addressed and investigated, years ago, by
an ethical government.
But we Bahamians, being mostly ignorant and corrupt ourselves, will
do nothing about any of this, except attack my comments, make lame
excuses, further criticize foreigners or whine and go to "another
message board."
Problem is, none of those responses even address, let alone solve,
the problem.
Some of the "wiser" Bahamians, those with their own columns in the
local newspapers, will wax on eloquently as if all this is nothing
but a tiny inconvenience in their pampered lives. They do not
realise that they are only preaching to the converted (the minority
of Bahamians who actually READ the papers) and that their mild
criticisms of the problems do nothing to fire up the masses and
encourage a real will to change.
So instead, I guarantee you, these same problems will exist a year
from now, and two years from now... and so on, until the thirty year
decline of the Bahamas reduces our status to that of our troubled
neighbour, Haiti. |
